Dermal Fillers Q & A

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are cosmetic gel-like injections that add volume under your skin to smooth out lines, plump up cheeks, and improve the look of your lips. As you age, your skin loses some of its volume as the subcutaneous fat starts to disappear. This allows your facial muscles to work closer to the skin, leading to the formation of lines and wrinkles.

Dr. Chou and her medical aestheticians use dermal fillers to replace this lost fat and give you back your youthful look without the need for invasive surgery.

What types of skin flaws can dermal fillers help?

Dr. Chou uses dermal fillers to improve a number of facial flaws. You may consider dermal fillers to:

  • Smooth out lines and wrinkles
  • Add volume to sunken cheeks
  • Plump up your lips
  • Raise a recessed scar
  • Decrease dark shadows under your eyes

Dr. Chou determines if dermal fillers make a good choice for you after a consultation. She is a facial aesthetic expert and knows exactly what treatments work to give you the look you want.

What can I expect during treatment?

Before you receive dermal fillers, your face is cleaned with an antibacterial and a numbing agent is applied to reduce any discomfort during the injections.

When ready, the dermal fillers are injected into very precise areas on your skin and massaged into place. Dr. Chou can see your new look unfold with each injection and adjusts as needed. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes, depending on the number of injections you need.

You may feel some soreness at the injection sites after treatment, but you can use ice or over-the-counter pain medication to reduce your discomfort.

You should see an improvement in your look immediately after your dermal filler treatment.

How long do dermal fillers last?

With good skin care habits, your dermal fillers should keep your skin looking young, smooth, and plump for up to a year. Dr. Chou provides instructions on how to care for your skin after treatment to help you maintain your results.

To protect your skin from the signs of aging, it’s important to use sunscreen daily and cover up with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses if you plan on being out in the sun for long periods of time.
